What We're Working On
Machine Learning for Transformer Failure
A statistical model capable of predicting transformer lifespan in the City.
Inspired by a recent audit, IPA’s Innovation Team partnered with Glendale Water and Power to develop the machine learning model. GWP will now be able to better predict when transformers will fail and which transformer types fair better than others under certain conditions. This tool will empower GWP staff to make more informed decisions when stocking their transformer inventory in the future.
Building Inspection Trainees
IPA has partnered with the Community Development Department to inspire and empower the next generation of building inspectors by building a career pipeline from local schools to City Hall.
Fraud Awareness Training
IPA is developing a fraud awareness training program for City staff; educating them on the types of fraud, what not to do, and how to report suspicious activity.
IPA has enlisted the help of a winner from this year’s Glendale Tech Week Hackathon to help improve the City’s Library Web Reservation Page.
Fire Prevention Bureau
Following an internal audit, IPA partnered with the Fire Prevention Bureau to update their policies and procedures.
IPA has partnered with the Glendale Police Department to help attract qualified candidates and reflect the diversity of the community.
IPA and a Lean Six Sigma team are replacing wet signatures with digital signatures for recreation classes, while strategizing for how digital signatures could be scaled City-wide.
IPA has partnered with the national Startup in Residence program to implement security improvements for visitors of our Central Library Branch. Tech startup, Sigma, is working to implement digitized door locks on the conference rooms doors; allowing patrons to control access during their reservation window.
IPA and a Lean Six Sigma team are developing and testing new solutions to improve the City of Glendale website.
IPA’s Innovation Team is developing a toolkit that will help the Homeless Programs staff integrate better with local care providers and optimize their management of care grants.
IPA and a Lean Six Sigma team are partnering with the Community Services & Parks and the Library, Arts & Culture departments to create more user friendly experiences and synergize their different services.
Digital Fee Calculator
An internal audit revealed that when calculating fees there weren’t any formal instructions for completing contracts; leading to extraneous processing times. We assembled a team with the Community Services and Parks Department to create the Digital Fee Calculator, which reduced calculation time from an average of 23 minutes to 2 minutes.
IPA was invited to partner with the Glendale Fire Department to build a custom recruitment website that incorporates user friendly tools and an intuitive design. Glendale Fire Department’s website, JoinGFD.com, assists candidates in navigating the multi-step process.
City-wide Job Shadowing Program
IPA and the Lean Six Sigma team launched a City-wide job shadowing program to break down bureaucratic silos, and allow employees to share institutional knowledge to learn more about how their individual roles fit into the larger picture of City operations.
Tree Management Consolidation
IPA and the Lean Six Sigma team helped consolidate tree management into the Public Works Department in order to facilitate an efficient allocation of resources and simplicity for residents and staff.
Employee Incentive Tracker
IPA created a tool for Glendale’s Integrated Waste team that reduced data logging redundancies and automatically generated reports for IW staff. The reports promote fiscal responsibility and improved trash collection services; increasing the quality of life for Glendale residents.
